1. God has to command it
2. We rest because God rested first.

Three reasons to rest:
1. To show that everything doesn’t depend on us.
2. To celebrate the past week.
3. To pause before our new week.

How to make the most of your rest.
1. Be strict about a weekly day of rest… but not too strict.
2. Give your computer a day off.
3. Add an element of service to your vacation.

1. It’s not a matter of dogma of Jesus followers.
2. It involves two biblical truths in dynamic tension.
3. When otherwise faithful Jesus followers disagree.

Three thinks we must do to maintain unity in diversity:
1. Let each person be fully convinced in his/her own mind
2. Those on the conservative side must stop judging those on the liberal side
3. Liberals must stop treating conservatives with contempt

What do we do with the energy of our strong moral concerns?
1. Redirect it from the issue at hand to the Judge of all
2. Redirect it from the issue to accepting your brother-sister just as Jesus accepted you
3. Redirect it from the issue to worshiping God

What do Psalms 47 and 98 say we should get from wholehearted worship in song?
1. A felt experience of God’s awesomeness
2. A sense that God is on the case of making our lives work out
3. Fresh confidence that God is bigger than the threats
4. Confidence that God will tell us everything we need to know.
5. A connection to the entire world
6. Confidence that God will work things out in the end.

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

The Birth of Jesus

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

The central hope of the Advent story? God takes the initiative.

How can we access God’s powerful initiative?
1. Pray for what’s on your heart with great faith. Or minimal faith.
2. As the shepherds did, take great pleasure in Jesus
3. When things are out of your control, gratefully give them to God
4. Delight in those armies of angels at work on your behalf. And on the off chance you have a direct experience of this, relish the experience.
5. Take great encouragement when you do see answered prayer.
6. Richly enjoy celebrating Christmas alon just these lines.

Everything Is Meaningless

Pleasures Are Meaningless

2. It’s fun to think that God is behind the work we have today

How can we, this hear, find this most important gift from God?
1. Feast on God first thing
2. Bank on God’s presence and encouragement more than on accomplishment
3. Take unreasonable pleasure in the companions God gives you along the way.
4. Give your apparent failures to God.
